Kelibia
Kelibia is a town on the coast of Tunisia, about 25 Km south of Cape Bon and an hour and a half from Tunis, in the province of Nabeul. The town today has a population of 40,000, and is an important fishing port. The main monument in Kelibia is the sixth-century Byzantine fortress overlooking the port area. Nearby are the remains of a Roman villa, featuring fine mosaics depicting hunting scenes.
The name of the town derives from the Phoenician port of Clupea, occupied by Agathocles in 310 BC and destroyed by Scipio in 146 BC: The municipality of Kélibia was established in 1957. The modern town centre extends inland, in the centre of a farming area where pulses, grapes and tobacco are grown.
An interesting fact: The island of Pantelleria can often be seen with the naked eye from Kélibia.
The 70 km (around 40 nautical miles) that separate the beach of Hammam El Ghezaz from the island of Pantelleria is the narrowest stretch of sea - and therefore the smallest distance - between Italy and the African continent.
